July 10, 2025 - Driving from Alaska to Maryland
Chicken

We got an early start out of Tok.  About six miles east of town, at Tetlin Junction, we turned north on Highway Five, into the great northern unknown.  Soon we were on gravel road.

After driving 75 miles through absolute wilderness, we came into the village of Chicken.  It consists of a a cafe with gas station, a small hotel, an RV park, a small general store and a saloon.  And an airstrip!

I didn't know much about Chicken but the Chicken Creek Cafe looked interesting so we decided to give it a try.

Store, Saloon and Cafe.  Maybe gas.  There is also an outhouse!

Chicken was originally founded founded on gold mining in the late 19th century; it is one of the few surviving gold-rush towns in Alaska.

Believe it or not, this is the "downtown".

It was still fairly early so we had breakfast in the cafe.  Lynnette ordered this huge sugarbun.

The Chicken Saloon with their world famous hat collection.  I bet this place is fun on a Friday night!

This is pretty much everything there is to know about Chicken.

The store -- not pictured -- had an interesting store with a great assortment of bumper stickers.

The gas pump and outhouse.

Yay, Chicken!

Further down gravel road was the airport.  There was no FBO or facilities of any kind, of course, but there was a plane parked on the ramp.  And a hangar.

The runway is in good shape.  I could land my RV-7 here no problem.

Looking the other way.
